My Best Mounts

For many players, collecting mounts is one of the most rewarding long-term goals in the game. Mounts are not just a way to travel; they are visual trophies that represent your history, your luck, and the obstacles you have overcome. Over more than twenty years of active play, I have added hundreds of mounts to my collection. This page outlines my absolute favorite mounts, how I earned them, and practical tips for adding them to your own stable.

1. Ashes of Al’ar

This majestic, glowing phoenix remains one of the most famous and highly sought-after mounts in the game. It trail-blazes across the sky leaving ribbons of pink and gold light behind it.

  • How I Earned It: I obtained this mount by defeating Kael’thas Sunstrider, the final boss of the Tempest Keep raid in Outland.
  • The Story: I ran Tempest Keep on multiple characters every single week during the Mists of Pandaria expansion. It took me exactly 84 attempts before the mount finally appeared in the boss’s loot.
  • My Farming Tip: At maximum level, you can easily solo this raid in under ten minutes. Skip the optional bosses and go straight to the main courtyard to defeat Kael’thas. Make sure to bring a class with high movement speed, like a Druid or Hunter, to make the run even faster.

2. Invincible’s Reins

This undead, winged stallion belonged to Arthas Menethil, the Lich King. It features glowing blue eyes, tattered wings, and heavy plate armor, making it the ultimate symbol of victory over the Scourge.

  • How I Earned It: This mount drops from the Lich King on 25-Player Heroic difficulty inside Icecrown Citadel.
  • The Story: This was a true test of patience. Because the drop rate is less than one percent, I spent over two years running the raid across an army of alternate characters. When it finally dropped, I remember staring at my screen in disbelief.
  • My Farming Tip: You can set up a “lockout save” using an alternate character. Clear the raid on normal difficulty up to the Lich King on one character, then share that save state with your other characters. This allows you to log in, jump straight to the final platform, flip the difficulty to Heroic, and fight the Lich King immediately without clearing the early bosses.

3. Astral Cloud Serpent

This stunning serpent is made of sparkling blue starlight and looks like a constellation moving through the sky. It is easily one of the most visually appealing mounts ever created.

  • How I Earned It: It drops from Elegon, the spectral dragon boss inside the Mogu’shan Vaults raid from the Mists of Pandaria expansion.
  • The Story: Unlike my other long farms, I got incredibly lucky with this one. It dropped on my twelfth attempt while I was running the raid on my Paladin for transmog gear.
  • My Farming Tip: You can run Mogu’shan Vaults on any raid difficulty (Normal or Heroic, 10 or 25-player) for a chance at the mount. The drop rate remains the same across all settings, so run it on 10-Player Normal to make the combat as fast and simple as possible.

4. Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent

This massive, dark dragon is surrounded by crackling white lightning. For many years, it was considered one of the rarest mounts in the entire game due to an incredibly low drop rate.

  • How I Earned It: I obtained it by defeating the Sha of Anger, a giant world boss that spawns in the Kun-Lai Summit zone of Pandaria.
  • The Story: I kept several alt characters parked at the Sha of Anger spawn point for months. Every Tuesday after the server reset, I would log into each character, join a group in the Group Finder, and defeat the boss. It took 315 attempts before I finally won the mount.
  • My Farming Tip: The developers have significantly increased the drop rate of this mount and other Pandaria world bosses in recent updates. If you have not farmed it recently, now is the perfect time to start, as your chances of getting it are much higher than they were in the past.
